Thomas Beckett Explorer Unit Row-a-thon raises money for RNLI
The Thomas Beckett Explorer Unit of Eastry raised over £1000 for the RNLI last weekend successfully covering 147km on an exercise rowing machine in 12h. “That’s equivalent to 4 trips across the Channel” said Group Scout Leader Graham Baker. It was an amazing event with 15 Explorers aged 14-17 sharing the rowing in 15 minute legs.
The team work and spirit were fantastic; changeovers were coordinated like F1 pit stop wheel changes with one person on each foot strap and another recording the distance covered. When they were not rowing they were running fundraising stalls and a BBQ.
It was fantastic that some of the Walmer RNLI team came along to cheer us through the last hour. It was a massive morale boost just when everyone was getting tired. They even helped to pace the final rowers using the spare machine to make sure we hit the distance.
The Unit have been planning the event for several months towards their fund raising badge and CSA Diamond Award which included a visit to the Walmer lifeboat station and My World Challenge activities in the other Sections.
They would like to thank all of the leaders, parents and sponsors that have helped them along the way including Tilmanstone Salads, Intercrop and Veg-UK for their donations and sponsorship which helped to make the event a success.
Also a million thanks go to Deal Rowing Club for the loan of their rowing machines.
