What is Community RePaint?

Community RePaint takes leftover paint from householders, painters and decorators and retailers & redistributes it at an affordable price to local community groups, charities, people on low incomes and those in need. Community RePaint is a nation-wide initiative. There is a network of schemes in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland with more being set up all the time.

Over 300 million litres of paint are sold each year. About 38 million litres is unused, stored in homes or garages or just thrown away. Community RePaint is trying to solve this problem at the same time as helping local people.

In Kind Direct

Surplus goods are generated in warehouses and factories belonging to manufacturers, retailers and other companies. In Kind Direct distributes office equipment, stationery, furniture, household appliances, cleaning products, toiletries, sports goods, toys, books, art and craft materials, computer software - in fact anything that charities use either for their own operations, to equip and furnish premises they provide or to give to the people they service for basic necessities, training or leisure opportunities.

Once donated to In Kind Direct the goods are taken into their warehouse and repacked as single items, into batches or into mixed complementary packs. They are then redistributed to organisations in the In Kind Direct network, each consignment being delivered to the charity's door.

Charities and voluntary organisation of every size and type all over the UK have joined their network. Registration is free and will give you access to the online catalogue which shows what goods are available.  You simply then select your order, paying only a handling charge to cover handling, packing and delivery.  You can pay online using debit or credit cards or by sending in a cheque.  The goods are delivered to your door usually within 14 days.  It's that simple!

You must not sell on the goods, barter or trade them.  In other words they cannot be used for fundraising activities such as raffles, tombolas or auctions, or sold in charity shops or markets or given to staff or volunteers.  They must be used to meet the operational needs of your Group/District.

Gift Aid – the easiest way to raise additional funds?

Gift Aid is a simple government scheme which allows charities to reclaim the basic rate tax donors have already paid on any donation. For every pound given you can get an extra 25p from HM Revenue and Customs helping your donations go further.

So what does this mean in real terms? If a Group has 50 members paying £60 per year it would give them a total income of £3,000 per year. Assuming all parents/guardians are tax payers then the potential Gift Aid is around £750 per year.

If your Group has not claimed Gift Aid before you are entitled to claim back the previous four years contributions. For donations between 6 April 2008 and 5 April 2011 you will also get a separate government supplement of 3p on every pound.

Before applying for Gift Aid, your Group/District must be registered with HMRC. For more details on this look here

There have been some recent changes to Gift Aid declaration wording. Check it out  here

Remember too that all records pertaining to your Gift Aid claims must be kept for six years after the end of the accounting period they relate to i.e your accounts up to 31st March 2015 if a claim is made in that period, records must be kept until 31st March 2021. The Jeremy Willson Grant

The Jeremy Willson Grant is available to individuals between the ages of 16 and 30 (and in some
situations, groups) to assist the funding of:

  • Training (leadership and adventurous activities (may include equipment))
  • Community or environmental projects (either at home or abroad)
  • Independent adventure

The Jeremy Willson Grant is funded by the Jeremy Willson Charitable Trust (JWCT) , a charity set up by the Willson family in tribute to and memory of Jeremy Willson. Jeremy, who had been a Scout in Kent, grabbed life in both hands and achieved more in his short life than most would expect to do in a whole lifetime. Jeremy died in 2006 aged just 30 from new variant Creutzfeldt - Jakob disease (vCJD). He was reduced from an incredibly active, outgoing and successful person, to a state in which he lost his ability to walk, remember, eat, co-ordinate, speak and do those things that we all take for granted.

Jeremy inspired and encouraged others to achieve things they did not think they were able to do. The Grant is available to individuals who, like Jeremy, wish to challenge themselves or make a difference to communities and the environment.

Grant guideline

  • Awards of funding shall be made available to individuals aged 16 to 30.
  • Where grants are given for community and environmental projects there must be a recognisable benefit to others.
  • The funding is not intended to subsidise adventurous holidays.
  • Those undertaking expeditions must be able to demonstrate the purpose of the trip.

In return for receiving funding the Willson family ask that:

  • Grant recipients provide feedback to the family via written reports, invitation to presentations, information for the Trust website www.jwct.org.uk, etc.
  • The Willson family would like to meet grant recipients wherever possible.
  • Grant recipients agree to media coverage within the Scout Associations policies and in agreement with Kent Scouts.

The funding will be allocated to applicants at the discretion of Kent Scouts with support from the trustees
of the JWCT.

Grow your Scouting with start-up grants

Grants from the Development Grants Board (DGB) can be used to start up a new section, train volunteers and support members with special needs.  Grants from the DGB have helped countless Groups from all over the UK, giving even more young people and volunteers the chance to join the Scouting adventure.
