Adult volunteers are at the heart of Scouting, and we hope that you will get every bit as much out of it as you put in. Scouting is not only about young people, but also about the development of adults within the Movement.
To support adults in Scouting, Kent Scouts provides a comprehensive programme of training to build on existing skills and knowledge and develop new competencies.
Some elements of training can count towards externally-recognised qualifications, and within the movement there are also awards to recognise dedication to training and outstanding service.
We hope that the resources on our website are helpful to support all learners (new and old) in acquiring, developing, validating and extending their skills and therefore making ‘everyday an adventure’ for all members of the Scouting family in Kent.

What: Leaders' Wood Badge Course
Where: Day 1 & 2 - Conference Centre, Lower Grange Farm, Grange Lane, Sandling, Maidstone ME14 3DA, For directions click on the 'County' link above, Day 3 - The Abbey School, Faversham
When: 15th/16th February (day 1 & 2) & 10th October (day 3) - ALL SESSIONS MUST BE ATTENDED
More info: A non-modular approach to the Adult Training Programme. To join this course participants must have already validated Getting Started (modules 1, 2 & 3) and be available to attend all three training days. Information on the course content will be passed to the participant’s LTM and TAs will be expected to meet with the participant to validate course content in between days 2 and 3. Participants will then need to validate day 3 learning and validate module 10 before a recommendation for the award of a Wood Badge can be made.
Please note: this is not a ‘drop-in/drop-out’ course. The training will be tailored to remove the overlap of the modular system which means key learning may be missed if the participant does not attend all the dates.

Administration Day - 7th November - Lower Grange Farm, Maidstone
Administration: An opportunity for leaders to complete training in the administration side of Residential Experiences. The day will cover finance, forms, In Touch, venues, budgeting, menu planning and programme for your residential experience. This day forms part of the training available for Skills for Residential Experience (38) course with a further weekend course covering the practical aspects offered at other times. Neither part is compulsory and you are very welcome to mix and match to meet your own needs.
Practcial Skills Weekends: This is a camp based course where the practical skills of a residential experience will be covered, from tent pitching, lighting fires, cooking, axe & saw, gadget making & knotting to camp fires & latrines and much much more. All you need is your tent and personal camping equipment. Booking via the online system only - do not send old paper forms to your LTM.
We're on the look out for some new talent to join our amazing team of Training Managers. Local Training Managers (LTMs) are invaluable across the County, supporting, planning and delivering quality learning and quality validations for all our adult volunteers in Kent. LTMs manage all aspects of training in the local district - liaising with the District Team, allocating Training Advisers to new learners and being there to provide the technical knowledge and support to every adult in the district.
Training requirements: Modules 28, 29 & 31 and attendance at a County Training Conference at least once every 5 years.
We currently have geographical vacancies in Sheppey and Malling, but we are keen to hear from anyone with an interest in the role, regardless of where you are based or if there is a vacancy or not - we'll do our best to find you a role!

We're also looking to fill a new role - Community Training Manager - for one of our four local training communities (specifically Community 3 comprising of six Districts - Romney Marsh, Folkestone & Hythe, Dover, Deal, Walmer & Sandwich, Thanet and Canterbury, Whitstable & Herne Bay).
Our local training communities are there to provide knowledgeable, timely and direct support to a small team of Local Training Managers, who in turn support the learning in their District. The four CTMs are supported by, and members of, the County Training Management Team and regularly meet as a team along with the County Training Manager to ensure training is the very best it can be in Kent. This is a new role, so will continue to evolve and be shaped by the appointee in partnership with the LTMs and County Training Manager. EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE TRAINING
WHO IS THIS TRAINING FOR?
This training is for all Executive Committee members, including Chairs, Treasurers and Secretaries, who sit on Group, District and County Executive Committees. This training does not replace 01E: Essential Information for Executive Committee Members, which should be undertaken separately.
HOW IS THIS TRAINING DELIVERED?
The training is a suite of five sessions. Any District or Group can book the training for their Executive Committee, however it works best with a range of Committees to share ideas and experiences.
The sessions are:
- EC01: Executive Committees: An Introduction (core)
- EC02: Officers of the Executive Committee
- EC03: Effective Executive Committees
- EC04: Finance for all members of the Executive Committee
- EC05: Recruitment and Induction of Executive Committee members

The Scout Association recommend that all drivers should have a Minibus Driver's Certificate in addition to the appropriate level of 'normal' driving licence. MiDAS is the recommended certificate and available nationally.

Small Bus Permits
ALL Scout groups (or districts) who operate a minibus (whether you own it or just hire it) need a small bus permit. Small bus permits are necessary so that voluntary groups like the Scouts can charge or accept any form of remuneration for providing transport for their own members, without having to comply with the full PSV operator licensing or PCV driver licensing requirements.
You can buy the Section 19 minibus permits from the Scout Information Centre on 0845 300 1818, at a cost of £5, or you can download the application form. There is more detailed information on minibus permits in the minibus permit covering letter.
Permits are organisation not vehicle specific.
