1st Willesborough Scout Group 90th Birthday Celebrations
On Saturday 17 July, 1st Willesborough, Ashford, Kent, celebrated its 90th birthday.
The very first Willesborough Troop was affiliated to a local Church. After WWII we met in a railway carriage, and in the 50's we moved to a traditional Scout Hut. In 1998 we made our final (?) move next door; to our present grounds.
We now have a large grassed area, brick building and plenty of space for all our 140 Young People (2 x Beavers, 3 x Cubs, 1 x Scouts and 1 x Explorers), and at least one section meets every weekday.
This day has been a special occasion and as one of the Founders of Scouting in Ashford, we celebrated big style, despite the appalling weather.
During the afternoon, there were fun, games and challenges for our Young People, in teams of 6 to 15 years old. There was Candy Floss, Popcorn, Drinks, Giant Jenga, Connect 4, Pebble painting, team challenges, ladder games, wet sponge throwing, biscuit-art (eaten afterwards).
Our families joined their children later for a Bar-B-Que and social.
The Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayoress planted a Celebration tree in our new Beaver Friendship Garden.
We're even invested a new Beaver into our "Heffalumps" Colony. Throughout the day ex-Willesborough Scouters, Scouts and Friends from times gone by, joined us to reminisce about "the good old days", and to see how we do things today.
Other guests included included our DC Pauline Saunders, ADCs and District Officers.
