RYA Powerboat Course

Over the weekend of 17 & 18 May, in near perfect weather conditions, Explorer Scouts, Leaders and Adult Supporters took up the challenge of taking their RYA Level 2 Powerboat Certificate.

The training course was run at OysterCoast Watersports, Kent Scouts Coastal RYA Recognised Training Centre at Whitstable. Five volunteer RYA Instructors, (all involved in Scouting in other capacities) presented the course which included boat handling skills in 5 metre RiBs and County's With 'Invicta'. A highlight for most of the candidates was the high speed manoeuvres session, where training takes place while travelling close to 30 knots over the water.

John Carden, the course organiser, said it was a great start to the season to be able to award all 8 with their RYA Level 2 powerboat qualification. It was particularly pleasing that 5 Explorer Scouts - 2 from Kent, 3 from Greater London South East - all with an interest in boating activities now have a internationally recognised qualification that will assist them with their water sport activities - 2 are trainee sailing instructors and need the powerboat certificate to be able to qualify as full sailing instructors and 1 is using the qualification towards the skills section of their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award, 1 will be using it for their Explorer Scout Platinum Award and all will have progressed towards their Personal Water Activity Permit and automatically gain their Water sports interest badge!

The cost of the course is £90 but this is incredible value for money. It is cheaper than the same course provided on a commercial basis and we are able give candidates more due to the different boats and helm set-ups that we have available. This is possible because of the investment that Kent Scouts makes in boating equipment needed to support its extensive water activity programme.

Details of the RYA training courses and water activity events can be found on the Water Activities down-load pages. Space is still available for the RYA L2 Powerboat course in May, and is open to Scouts aged 14+, Explorers, Network, Adult Leaders, Adult supporters that work regularly with the training sections and Adult Active Support members.  John Carden said, it would be good to see Cub and Scout Leaders on the course so that, in time, they were able to borrow the County's boats and take their section members afloat. Achieving the course and going on to get a Water Activities Permit should be well within the capability of most people.
