Recognition for going above and beyond!

In May of this year two volunteers from 1st Brenchley and Matfield Scout Group, Batch (Cub Leader) and Immy (Young Leader), undertook an extraordinary challenge. Alongside one of their Cubs (from a St Barnabas Cub Scout Group), Darcie, they used a specialist all‑terrain wheelchair to help her reach the summit of Mount Snowdon.

Darcie lives with long‑term health and developmental challenges, and without their dedication, this adventure would not have been possible.

Batch has supported Darcie for years on a 1‑to‑1 basis at weekly meetings, ensuring she can participate fully in every activity. His patience, care, and determination have given her the confidence to embrace the outdoors and feel truly included in Scouting.

Immy, despite being a young leader, showed maturity and leadership far beyond her age. She played a key role throughout the challenge, offering practical support, encouragement, and genuine kindness.

Their efforts extended beyond the climb itself. The challenge also raised funds to:

• Cover the cost of the specialist wheelchair (£500)
• Support Oakley School in Tunbridge Wells, where Darcie is a pupil, contributing to new playground facilities, specialist equipment, and accessible learning resources

This was not simply a fundraiser or a hike. It was a life‑changing experience for Darcie – a powerful message that nothing is out of reach, and a shining example of what inclusive Scouting looks like at its best.

In recognition of this AMAZING feat Nirav, our County Lead Volunteer, and Dave, the County Programme Team Leader - Adventure, went along to meet all three of these outstanding people at a weekly Cub meeting in order to make some special presentations.

Dave had the pleasure of of presenting Darcie with a Certificate of Achievement for her phenomenal efforts to reach the top of Snowdon despite the challenges her health and developmental conditions presented her.

Nirav then went on to present both Batch and Immy with Commendations for their exceptional service, compassion, and leadership not only in this achievement alone but in all that they do for Darcie and others in Scouting.
