Sheppey Scouts hiking their way to KIJ!
9th June 2024

On the 2nd of June Sheppey district scouts and explorers embarked on a 16 mile hike to raise sponsorship for KIJ25. This idea came about a couple of months back, myself and Mandy Fewtrell were chucking ideas back and forth on what we can do to help the YP. We decided we were going to plan a hike, but this needed to be a challenge, be different, have a meaning. Mandy started googling on her phone then says to me “ From sheerness to Detling is approx 16 miles, ITS 16 Miles TO KIJ”.
The idea was set now came the weeks of route planning/walking working out a route on our island that will cover 16 miles and all the other bits involved, we had our team of volunteers, safety car for first aid water and extraction if needed,
With 50 scouts and explorers plus all the volunteers we set off on our journey from sheerness at 9 am
Our route took us through, Bluetown, along the harbour of Queenborough. Through to halfway where we got some stunning views of the island and mainland from the top of the hill, Minster leas where we stopped for a well earned lunch break, Eastchurch, Warden, Leysdown and then finishing at Shellness at 5.10 pm very tired but massive smiles all round from there achievement.
Everyone involved was eager to complete this challenge which we are very proud of them all
