Where is the event being held?
Betteshanger Country Park, Sandwich Road, Deal, Kent CT14 0BF.

How many in a team?
Max 6 per team Scouts or 6 per team Explorers (No mixed teams containing both scouts and explorers)
What is the closing date for entries?
Teams must be booked in, by their leader, by Friday 2nd June.
What time does event finish?
Race finishes at 12 noon. Awards presentation will be at 12:45pm.
Do teams need to have their own leaders?
Yes, each team must have their own leaders, ratios as per POR. Each team must complete a Nights Away Notification to their DC. Leaders are responsible for their own young people whilst at the event and responsible for knowing who is on track at any time.
Do adults need DBS checks?
All adults staying overnight (past park closure time) must be DBS checked. Individual groups leaders are responsible for their own adults.
Is Betteshanger open to the general public during the event?
Betteshanger is open to the general public during normal opening hours as published on their website. Outside of these hours, we have sole use.
Who is responsible for bikes and belongings?
All bikes and belongings are the responsibility of your group. We recommend they are locked when not being used.
Do we have to wear cycle helmets?
Yes, all participants must wear a helmet whilst on bikes.
Will bikes be checked for roadworthiness?
Yes. Although it is the group leaders’ responsibility to ensure all bikes are roadworthy, bikes will be inspected prior to access onto the track. The scout cyclist badge gives information on bike maintenance. https://www.scouts.org.uk/scouts/activity-badges/cyclist/
Do we need lights on bikes?
Yes. The track is partially flood lit but does have some dark areas.
How will participants be identified?
Wristbands will be provided for all participants and leaders and must be worn at all times.
How will teams be identified?
Coloured bibs will be provided.
Will there be marshals on the track?
Marshalls will be present around the track during race times.
Can we bring our own cooking stoves/can we have an open fire?
Due to the time of year, no gas or open fires are allowed.
Will young people need money?
There are stalls and tuck shop available to purchase food. We also hope to have a bike shop to purchase spares if needed. During opening hours, Betteshanger Park café will be open.
Will food and drink be available?
Yes, a Burger bar/hot food stall will be available throughout the event (at minimal cost), Free tea and coffee will be available in the leader’s tent. Squash and hot chocolate will be made available to the young people.
Is camping available?
The amphitheatre is available for camping and is best suited to small 2/3-man tents.
Are there toilets and showers on site?
Free toilets and showers are available on site.
Is scout uniform required?
No. Clothing suitable for all weather conditions is required.
Can we use power assisted bikes?
No power assisted bikes are allowed
Can riders ride for more than one team?
Riders may only ride for the one team.
How is speed controlled round the track? Can riders overtake?
There are slow and fast lanes. Riders must overtake on the right.
Is parking free?
At present, parking is chargeable (see Betteshanger Country Park website). We are hoping to negotiate on this. 0-20 mins drop off is free.
What is needed in the Pit Lane?
Each group will be allocated an area to pitch a gazebo (6x3m max) to store bikes and prepare for the race. Groups will need to provide battery lights for this area. There is a prize for the best decorated pit area.
